ABOUT US
Oxford University Modern Pentathlon Association offers one of the university's most challenging and interdisciplinary sports opportunities. We cater to those of all skill levels, from complete beginners to those seeking high-level competition.
The Modern Pentathlon consists of five disciplines designed to test the complete athlete. The disciplines are spread between four events:
Swimming
200m freestyle (8 lengths of 25m)
Épée Fencing
one touch round-robin
Obstacle Course Racing (OCR)
including hanging rings, monkey bars, and the infamous warped wall
Combined Running and Laser Pistol shooting
5x600m on the athletics track with shooting in between
In competitions, the events are run separately throughout the day with short breaks in between. Check out the new OCR discipline here
Membership includes access to all training sessions, coaching, and kit use. We also offer laser run/OCR only memberships.
For the social athlete, OUMPA also offers regular social events with meals, crew dates and nights out being offered throughout term time. The competitions display the team's infamous ability to perform in the notorious 6th and 7th events.
This is an exciting and changing time for the sport of modern pentathlon and a great time to get involved. Watch Team GB take double gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics!

Competitions
OUMPA runs and competes in several key competitions throughout the year, so keep your diaries open for these exciting opportunities:

Novice Varsity Match, MT - A friendly introduction competition for pentathlon beginners to compete against those from Cambridge. Held at home in Oxford this year on Saturday 15th November 2025.

Oxford Tetrathlon, MT - A new competition for the 2025/26 season, this is a chance to compete with pentathletes from Oxford and surrounding areas. Perfect for new athletes to test their skills or for returning athletes to start the competition season. Taking place in Oxford on Saturday 29th November 2025.

National Rankings MT/HT - For the experienced pentathlete, this is a chance to compete with the best in the UK. A series of competitions held at the National Pentathlon Hub at the University of Bath. Provisional dates for this year's competitions are: 20th-21st December 2025; 24th-25th January 2026; 21st-22nd February 2026.

Cuppers, HT - Bring all your friends along for the ultimate competition to decide which college is truly the best! A friendly, open-to-all laser-run competition, which will take place Wednesday 25th January 2026 (5.00-7.00pm).

BUCS, HT - The national university competition for modern pentathlon. Your last chance to prove yourself before varsity selection. OUMPA have a history of doing Oxford proud at this one. Plus there are shiny medals up for grabs. Taking place at the University of Bath on Saturday 28th March 2026.

Varsity, Easter Vac - The Oxford vs Cambridge showdown! Held on neutral ground at Bath National Training Centre, this is the competition of the year. And oh boy is it a big one. This will be the highlight of your pentathlon career. Taking place on 11th April 2026.

Old Blues, TT - Your chance to compete with the golden oldies themselves and meet some living legends. Though the meal is by far the most famous part, the competition is a good one.
